THE VILLAGE STORY BOOK

THE POEMS OF NUMBER SYX

"RESIGNATION", By Number Syx.

A stern man with a steely glance
Stands before the desk
He's throwing down his papers
Anger filling him inside

He's resigned.

No one saw it coming
No one even dreamed of it
The day this man would leave
In a burst of thunder

He's resigned.

He refused to tell his reasons
He would not tell them why
All they knew was he was gone
And wouldn't ever return

He's resigned.

His lover was confused
She didn't know his plans
But now he is a-fury
At the man he called his boss

He's resigned.

He feels he is disattatched
Now that he has left
But he couldn't be more wrong
They've taken him away

He resigned.

"REASONS" By Number Syx

For peace of mind
That was the reason he gave
But no other clues
To the end of his career

Too many people know too much
A fleeting thought he had
He says he knows too much
And thus he chose to leave

And They've probed his inner thoughts
His dreams for all to see
They want to get inside his head
But he will not let Them in

Brainwashing is the least They've done
To try to let him know
They need to know what's in his mind
What his reasons were

He never once gave in
to the enticings They offered
“Tell us and we'll let you go”
Nice try, he thinks to Them

And now his ordeal is over
The punishment is through
Now They crown him a hero
Now he is idolized

"SILENCE" By Number Syx

slowly going mad
from what they've done to me
why did they do this?
why must they find out
the secrets in my head?

they say they don't want to damage me
they want me to stay well
but then, why this horrid treatment?
why do they want me to declare
the secrets in my head?

they've done all sorts of things to me
even made me left-handed once
all to find out information
all to get me to say
the secrets in my head

but I'm not going to succumb to them
I'm not going to let them knows
they could have just asked nicely
but they've gone through all this trouble to learn
the secrets in my head

"NUMBERLESS II - FRAGMENTS" By Number Syx

Above the sphere that enshrouds my head
Numberless waits, as good as dead
The days are gone, all trace forgotten
Its mind is lost, its brain gone rotten
Electroshock nightmare runs through my brain
Destroying the memories by use of of the pain
I lay in the darkness, surrounded by gloom
And Numberless waits in the dark gray room

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"RESIGNED" By Number Syx

I don't belong to you anymore
I've resigned
I'm not your puppet anymore
I am free
I'm not subject to your rules
I'm myself
I've realised I've been your slave
I've resigned
I know that I'll never go back
I am free
I'm no more restricted by you
I'm myself
I'm not going to tell you why
I've resigned
I won't be controlled by you
I am free
I've been detached from the Job
I'm myself
I'm more of an individual
I've resigned
I've told you already, I'm not your slave
I've resigned.

"INTERROGATION" By Number Syx

Questions, questions, questions
I am bombarded by them
I asked many questions once
After all, it was my job
But now I'm being questioned
I'm not going to answer them

I resigned from my job of questions
And they turned the tide on me
Now they're the ones asking questions
To find out why I resigned

They use all manners of methods
To try to break my will
I'll try to resist as long as I can
But I wonder who'll snap first?

I am a prisoner in this place
One of the few who fights
They can't make me a number
I'll always be myself

I am an individual
Nothing they'll do will change it
Social Conversion, brainwashing, drugs
They only work so long
Degree Absolute was the final test
And I survived it
Then I was praised for my resistant self
And now they call me Sir

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"RESISTANCE" By Number Syx

They drugged me again
They want to find out
Information
Information
They won't get it
They think they will
But they won't
I resist

They brainwashed me again
They want to find out
Information
Information
They won't get it
They think they will
But they won't
I resist

I am a prisoner here
They want to find out
Information
Information
They won't get it
They think they will
But they won't
I resist

As I sleep I keenly hear
Words of my subconscious:
“Resist the treatments
Maintain oneself”
I'm Number Six
True individual
Not a glop
I resist

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"SOLITARY FIGHT" By Number Syx

I am a prisoner here
Trapped in a paradise
Trapped without self
Trapped alone

I try to fight them
I usually win
But the only ones who truly win

Are the ones who keep me here
No; my life is this
A fight to keep stalemate

Between myself and them
Alone I fight to keep myself
Alone I resist their ways
I'll likely always be alone
In my fight to keep me sane

All of this fighting's wearing me out
I cannot fight for long
But while I can, I'll fight hard
And give them a run for their money
Although I know I'll never win
This solitary fight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"NEVER AGAIN" By Number Syx

shard of glass in my hand
blood everywhere
never again will he do this to me
never again take away my life

my eyes are set
my mind is clear
never again to forget what has happened
never again forget my reason

breathing unsteady
hands shaking wildly
never again will I kill a man
never again will he kill me

a man is standing near
he asks me why I did it
never again will he follow me
never again to observe me

"Never again."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"NUMBER ONE" By Number Syx

extreme chaos will ensue
when number one is unmasked
I am the master of village chaos
I am number one
I have been unmasked
I have been unleashed
let chaos come

"A. B. & C" By Number Syx

The first one was an old friend
Now turned enemy
He tried to buy my knowledge from me
A thing I would not sell
We fought, I won, and then woke up
It all was just a dream.

The second was a lady fair
A friend of mine from old
She tried to ransom my reason from me
A thing I would not give
I tried to find out who she was
But it was all just a dream.

The third was under my control
A riotous, frenzied mess
They tried to get inside my head
A place they would not get
As the door opened on to black
My body nearly gave out.

The fourth and final lettered foe
Was kept a mystery
He tried to take my future from me
A thing he'll never win
I unveiled the identity of the mystery ma
It all was just my dream.

A, B, C, and D
Were used to infiltrate
They tried to wrench my secret from me
A thing they'd never know
I succeeded, they failed, and all was done
It passed just like a dream.

"A CHANGE OF MIND" By Number Syx

Alone in the woods he keeps up shape
Apart from everyone else
He likes his solitude; his quiet peace resounds
In the distance he hears people
Marching to the rhythmic cries of
Un-mutual! Un-mutual!

He sits in the council chambers
Conforming but only just
He enjoys the game he plays; he wins it many times
In the back of his mind he hears people
Marching to the rhythmic cries of
Un-mutual! Un-mutual!

He sits alone in his cottage, smiling
He knows he's playing rebel
He grows stronger each time he does; he knows it very well
Outside his door he hears people
Marching to the rhythmic cries of
Un-mutual! Un-mutual!

He wanders the woods alone now
Bitter from being shunned
The women come to take him away; to a place he'll best be cured
Pushing him along he hears people
Marching to the rhythmic cries of
Un-mutual! Un-mutual!

Now he's all better; they've calmed his mind
No more a rebel, our Six
A quiet chat, a cup of tea, relaxation at last
At last he doesn't hear people
Marching to the rhythmic cries of
Un-mutual! Un-mutual!

He figured out what's really going on
And turned the tide on Two
The Village square, the perfect place to plant an effective lie
Number Two's now followed by people
Marching to the rhythmic cries of
Un-mutual! Un-mutual!

"THE GIRL WHO WAS DEATH" By Number Syx

My name is Sonia
I am known as Death
White-clad, lethally fair
Cross my path
Make me mad
Fall in love
Attempt my tests
And you will know
Why they call me Death

My name is Death
My father calls me Sonia
White-clad, lethally fair
Love me,
Fear me,
Fight me
And you will know
Why my name is Death

"THE SCHIZOID MAN" By Number Syx

“I am Number 6!”
His screams invade my head
“He's the one I know. He's Number 6.”
Her sentence rips my heart
“My dear chap,”
He addresses a friend
Laughter, mad laughter
His mind invades my own
“I'm Number 12”
When did that occur?
“Where did they get you, a people's copying service?”
The man in the mirror taunts
“Who am I? Why am I here?”
I'm slowly going mad
“Don't forget, Number 12, you're now left-handed.”
Who are these voices I here?
“One squirt you're paralyzed, two squirts you're dead.”
I cannot seem to care
I'm losing my grip on sanity
I have become The Schizoid Man

"THE CHIMES OF BIG BEN" By Number Syx

A new friend of mine
In a place of none
Is she really as she appears?
Nonetheless I befriend her
All the same she suspects

Nadia attempts escape
But the bubble swallows her
Is this all a clever scheme?
Nonetheless I go to see her
All the same she tries to die

I take here under my care
We form a plan to leave
Can I really trust her?
Nonetheless I display my boat
All the same they don't see

We escape to Nadia's friend
We are finally going home
Twelve hours we spend in the crate
And finally reach my home

The night is young, and questions await
Why did I resign?
Dong, dong, dong, the clock strikes eight
My watch shows eight; it shouldn't

The sounds of London traffic stop
As I unplug the tape machine
Nothing was as it seemed, Nadia least
I never left the Village

"DANCE OF THE DEAD" By Number Syx

A call in the night—faked
A security breach—false
I won't tell a thing—I'll die first

She says I slept fine—false
My maid is unique—untrue
Can I do as I please, feel free—never

A joyous event to night—not really
The crowd is blissful—a facade
A Carnival and dance—I won't attend

A corpse on the beach—how strange
A radio in his pocket—how odd
Illegal to own one, she'll report on it—ridiculous

Dutton, a broken man—sorrow
The body goes back out to sea—alone
Tonight is a night for dancing—masquerade

I've not got a costume—hunh
A happy occasion—really
Execution order for Roland Dutton—a gasp

The cabaret's beginning—it's me
On trial for the radio—a joke
The sentence is death on me—I laugh

Fleeing through halls—survival
The body's to be used by them—defeat
And Number Two wins the battle of wills—she laughs

"ARRIVAL" By Number Syx

What's the name of this place I find myself in?
All I've done was resign
Nothing to harm, no desire to hate
Why have I been taken?

Why is this place such a nightmare to me?
I'm not a number at all
Not your slave, not your possession
Why did you kidnap me?

What is the bubble-thing that's following me?
I've not tried to escape as yet
No aggression, just distaste
I'm in a prison for what?

Why have you taken Cobb's mind away?
He was a good friend of mine
Now he's dead, all friendship removed
What did he do to you?

Who is this girl I am trusting for now?
She's helping me escape
Electropass disk, but she stays behind
What's wrong with this situation?

What made me trust that woman?
She was working for them
Betrayed me, misused me
Why am I never to leave?

"FREE FOR ALL" By Number Syx

They make their choice once a year
Who will lead them the next
Now is the time to run for office
I think I'll play the game

Electoral speeches, all that stuff
Regarded with amused fury
They laugh as I make my speech
I'll teach them to laugh

Outgoing council, what rot that is
A bunch of tailor's dummies
Who's running the farce, I wonder
Sick humour runs amok

Dizzy, spinning, wild tunnel
A cup of tea would be nice
I'm afraid of nothing
Least of all myself

Lie
Lie
Truth
Inside my head

Vote for me! I'm for you!
I'm the people's man!
Number 2's afraid of me
A little drink won't hurt
Vote! Vote! Vote!

Unanimous vote, all for me!
I'm the people's 2!
I'm shown the ropes, I've fairly won
Freedom can all be yours
Vote! Vote! Vote!

Take your chance,
Be free!
Escape while you can

Tic tic
Slap
What's going on?

Fight in the outer hallway
Barely conscious now
Five of them, one of me
This is hardly fair!

Will you never learn?
The woman asks
This is all too much
The truth is now revealed

I've lost, they've won
They take me to my house
The bitter truth is sinking in
As I recover myself

"ONCE UPON A TIME" By Number Syx

It's the only way
One week

Removed to childhood
Trust needed

Talking in class
Not a rat

Graduation day
A fight

Childhood again
Numbers game

Boxing match
Fight, boy

Fencing tournament
Kill, boy

Job interview
Secret, good

Speeding trial
Contempt

In the jail
Kill me

Bomber squad
Zero, go

Utter reversal
Equals now

Countdown to death
Deep fear

He is dead now
I'm scared

The body as evidence
I've won?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"TITLE SEQUENCE" By Number Syx

Thunderclap
A sonic boom
The sound of an engine roars through town
And goes in the garage

Step, step, step
An angry man
Marches to the beat of the fury within
Prepared for what comes next

Thunderclap
Throw open the doors
Fling down the envelope with a roaring voice
A fist on the desk

Freedom
He's going home
Leaving on holiday for a very long time
But will he return?

Filing
Letters across his face
Deleting what life he once had
Putting him in the file

Packing frenzy
Suitcase on the bed
The gas pours in, the death-knell rings
The man falls

Awakening
A bleary blink
Looking out the window, he sees paradise
He is not at home

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"HAMMER INTO ANVIL" By Number Syx

One must be anvil or hammer
But which of us is which?
A threat to break my will is made
Then the call came in
I smile to see the certain truth
He's intimidated
Something about a hammer, I think he said
We'll see the anvil soon

Music—a secret message?
And who is X.O.4?
Conspiracies are all around
Who can a person trust?

Not musicians
Not scientists
Not pigeons, nor clocks, nor even computers
Paranoia goes on forever

In the end, I've hammered him out
His friend comes to fight
A sweat doesn't even break out on my brow
No wonder he's been fired
I go to see the malleable man
And tell him what I see
He's a weak link in the chain of command
He will report himself
